Social Justice and Human Rights are core values for people of the Christian faith. We view social justice in the broadest possible sense, including issues related to the ecology, the environment,
the economic system, legal system, and inclusivity in all of its meanings.
• Our outreach efforts are intended to reach into the community. We accomplish this my sustained partnerships with like-minded groups and organizations including CHOICES (Children Helping Obesity in Children End Successfully), MAC, )(Midtown Assistance Center), Veteran Assistance and Support Program, ….
Our Health and Wellness Committee is made up of health professionals and lay people. It calls our attention to the many ways our physical, mental and spiritual health can be enhanced through good nutrition and information sharing, community health forums and health screening.
Study and Spiritual Formation go hand in hand and is a cradle to grave journey. We offer Monday Night Virtual Zoom Sessions, Sunday Classes for people of all ages, and periodic special topics classes such Women in the Bible, Sexuality and the Bible, the Representation of Evil in the Plays of August Wilson.
We offer several programs for our youth, including Sunday School, Discovery Week Vacation Bible, Confirmation, Special Trips and Winter Retreats, and Summer Arts and Education Camps, and a Summer Youth Corps. service experience.
First Church is located in the heart of the Georgia State University campus. We are literally surrounded by thousands of students. Our College Ministry Task Force in partnership with our seminarian intern and clergy are developing programs focused on the realities of today’s student challenges which include spiritual development but also mental health challenges, food insecurity, and basic financial needs. Our College Ministry seeks to serve as a hub for campus conversations amongst the many Atlanta colleges and communities, including the AUC, Morehouse, Spelman, Emory, Agnes Scott, Oglethorpe, and Georgia Tech.
• First Church is committed to serving the entire Atlanta community, not just its members. It offers Summer Camp and After School Programs and partnered with other community organizations such as the Pave Foundation, Inc which mentors young girls and encourages their interest in STEM fields.
First Church has a rich and diverse music ministry reflective of an appreciation for all musical styles and genres. Our organist Trey Clegg offers monthly musical recitals at his Midweek Musical Meditations, Pastor Dwight Andrews’s directs the Third Sunday Jazz Band every third Sunday as Ambassador Andrew Young preaches, and other offerings include special concerts, the Atlanta Music Festival, and the annual Holiday Jazz Vespers.
